There is a song that completely captivates me every time I hear it - I OWN this song, embody the imagery and the truth of the lyrics. It forms the basis of my best work - and reminds of my reason for creating art - and brings out the best version of myself.

Wonder by Natalie Merchant (if you can’t recall it, here is a link to her video on YouTube take a moment and enjoy.)

They say I must be one of the wonders
Of God's own creation
And as far as they see, they can offer
No explanation

Newspapers ask intimate questions, want confessions
They reach into my head to steal, the glory of my story

They say I must be one of the wonders
Of God's own creation
And as far as they see, they can offer
No explanation

Ooo, I believe, fate, fate smiled
And destiny laughed as she came to my cradle
Know this child will be able

Laughed as my body she lifted
Know this child will be gifted
With love, with patience, and with faith
She'll make her way, she'll make her way

People see me I'm a challenge to your balance
I'm over your heads how I confound you
And astound you
To know I must be one of the wonders

They say I must be one of the wonders
Of God's own creation
And as far as they see, they can offer
No explanation

Ooo, I believe, fate, fate smiled
And destiny laughed as she came to my cradle
Know this child will be able
Laughed as she came to my mother
Know this child will not suffer
Laughed as my body she lifted
Know this child will be gifted
With love, with patience and with faith
She'll make her way, she'll make her way

This song always makes me think of the scene in Cinderella (the Classic Fairy book version) where all the fairies gather to bestow their wishes on the new princess. A curse was also placed on the child - but ultimately it was altered and in the end “she’ll make her way” with love, with patience and with faith, she’ll make her way.

I have certainly been making my way down this wonderfully winding road of creativity - from painting murals to set design and visual merchandising, to freelance writing, sculptures and public art projects, with loads of teaching along the way. Every step has taught me something new and has led to another open door. I can’t wait to see what’s next!
